CLARIN2021 was organised for the wider humanities and social sciences communities in order to exchange ideas and experiences with the CLARIN infrastructure. This includes the design, construction and operation of the CLARIN Technical Infrastructure, the data, tools and services that are offered or for which there is a need, the actual use by researchers, the CLARIN Knowledge Infrastructure and the relation to other initiatives within the research infrastructure landscape.
The 2021 edition of the CLARIN Annual Conference was an online event. The virtual format enabled us to share quality content with more than 400 registered participants, including attendants of previous editions as well as newbies with an interest in getting familiarised with what CLARIN is about.
Day 1
On Monday 27 September 2021 the conference opened with a welcome message by Franciska de Jong (Executive Director CLARIN ), Maciej Piasecki (National Coordinator CLARIN-PL) and Monica Monachini (National Coordinator CLARIN-IT).
The opening session was followed by the 8th edition of the Steven Krauwer Awards. The 2021 Steven Krauwer Award for CLARIN Achievements was awarded to Tomaž Erjavec (Jožef Stefan Institute / CLARIN.SI) for his outstanding contributions toward CLARIN goals.
The first invited talk titled From Punched Cards to Linguistic Linked Data ...Through Infrastructures, was given by Marco Passarotti (CIRCSE Research Centre, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milano, Italy), chaired by Monica Monachini.
The conference continued with the first five-minute paper presentation session on the topics of resources and research use cases, chaired by Martin Wynne.
During the lunch break, the CLARIN Café: Interactive Q&A Session for Newcomers to CLARIN took place, moderated by Francesca Frontini. Afterwards, Dieter Van Uytvanck, CLARIN ERIC Technical Director, presented the state of the technical infrastructure. This was followed by the PhD student session chaired by Darja Fišer.
The conference continued with the second five-minute paper presentation session on the topics of research data management, metadata and curation, legal issues related to the use of LRs in research and resources, chaired by Juan Steyn. The day concluded with a wrap-up session, where the highlights of the day were presented by Eva Soroli, with illustrations by Marta Fioravanti @nonlineare
Day 2
The second day of CLARIN2021 opened with a presentation by the CLARIN2021 programme committee chair Monica Monachini and was followed by a presentation about the state of the CLARIN infrastructure by CLARIN ERIC Executive Director Franciska de Jong.
The second conference day continued with the Teaching CLARIN in Times of Corona session, where respondents to the Teaching with CLARIN call presented the efforts made by teachers, lecturers and trainers throughout the CLARIN network during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session was followed by the Teaching with CLARIN Award, which was awarded to Darja Fišer & Kristina Pahor de Maiti, Mietta Lennes, and Diana Maynard for successfully integrating CLARIN tools and resources into their courses.
Frida Steurs chaired the CLARIN2021 Bazaar, an informal setting for conversations, and a space to showcase relevant research and work to colleagues. At the end of the day, the highlights of the day were presented by Tomaž Erjavec. with Illustrations by Marta Fioravanti @nonlineare.
Day 3
The five-minute presentation session of day 3 were focused on annotation and acquisition tools, national CLARIN centers and resources, and were chaired by Antonio Branco, Kiril Simov and Costanza Navarretta.
The third invited talk of the conference, entitled Language Modeling and Artificial Intelligence, was given by Tomáš Mikolov (Czech Institute for Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics of the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic), and was chaired by Jan Hajič. Andreas Witt closed the conference by presenting the highlights of day 3, with illustrations by Marta Fioravanti @nonlineare.

Accepted papers were published in the CLARIN2021 Proceedings. Selected full papers will be published in a digital conference proceedings volume at Linköping University Electronic Press within about six months of the end of the conference. Once available, a direct link to the publication will be added to the conference page.
